A charge controller does one major thing and that is charge batteries, it can be used to charge deep cycle batteries with solar panels, a charge controller is necessary to use in a circuit in order to protect the battery from overcharging or from over discharging. But this is not applicable when using solar panels smaller than 5 Watts. The charge controller used in a solar system setup depends majorly on two things: the VOLTAGE and the capacity of the CURRENT or current capacity. VOLTAGE: When setting up a solar system, choose the charge controller that is compatible with the system voltage. The standard configurations of charge controllers are 12, 24, and 48 volts.
